 From Sara Paretsky to the late Eleanor Taylor Bland, from cozies to capers to noir, Chicago women have mastered the crime writing genre. The women writers group FLOW (For Love of Writing) will present three of these writers on Sunday, March 22 from 2-4 pm for a reading and discussion at Bookies, 10324 S. Western Avenue in Beverly.

 Mary Carter

The author of 22 novels, Mary Carter (who writes under the pen name, Carlene O’Connor) is a USA Today Bestselling author. Murder in an Irish Cottageis the latest release in her Irish Village Mystery Series line of cozy mysteries. Carter is also a writing coach and instructor at Chicago’s famed Writer’s Loft. 

 Tracy Clark

Tracy Clark is a native Chicagoan who writes mysteries set in her hometown. Cass Raines is a feisty, fearless Black Chicago police officer turned private eye. Borrowed Timeis third release in Tracy Clark’s award-winning Cass Raines series of detective novels.

Sandra Jackson-Opoku

The author of award-winning mainstream fiction, Sandra Jackson-Opoku makes her crime writing debut with the publication of the noir novella, Double Trouble. Her work appears alongside 15 other writers in Both Sides: Stories from the Border,an anthology of “border noir” edited by Gabino Iglesias.  

 After romance, crime writing represents the second best selling category of American book sales. In cozy mysteries an amateur sleuth, usually female solves crimes in a close-knit community. In the detective genre, a private gumshoe is hired to crime-solve in the dark underbelly of the city. Noir fiction features a deeply-flawed anti-hero sleuth that operates on the margins of society. Other crime writing sub-genres include police procedural, caper, hard-boiled, true crime, suspense, and legal thrillers. 

 Authors will read from their work, present an informal discussion and answer questions from the audience. Copies of their publications will be available for sale and signing.
